IRON

Rusted Dirt Floor, 2007, sifted soil, iron content 356fe removed with magnets, 15×15 ft.

The iron content of this soil is high enough that it sticks to a magnet. In contrast, at the time, I was tremendously iron deficient.

Geophagia, 2008, series of photographs, 20×24 in.

Geophagia is the compulsion to eat soil, thought to affect predominately pregnant woman. Modern research has confirmed that iron deficiency is often the culprit. Each woman in the photo has an edible photo soil wafer in her mouth and a nutrition label with the actual nutritional content of that soil sample.

Geophagia, 2008, cast clay cones, dimensions variable.

These oversized dirt cones are based on smaller ones offered for sale in African markets. They are meant to be eaten.

Fill, 2006, soil, wood, vinyl letters.
